Jazz in the Afternoon
at The Woolpack Pub
Some of the best Live Jazz in Surrey: We have live Jazz on the first Tuesday of the month from 2.30pm – 5.30pm.
The Woolpack was the local pub of Humphrey Lyttelton’s trombonist/arranger Pete Strange where he regularly met over a pint with fellow musicians and jazz friends. In mid-September 2007 we celebrated his memory with an All-Star Tribute featuring over three hours of high quality Dixieland, Swing and Mainstream jazz.
The success of the event prompted monthly afternoon sessions, with the full support of Angela and Danny. Four excellent bands play in rotation: Pete Skivington’s Dixielanders, the Jack Honeyborne All-Star Sextet, Mike Byrne’s Thameside Seven and John Goddard’s Okeh All-Stars. Well-known musicians include trumpeters Ronnie Hughes, Ken Sims and Chez Chesterman, trombonists Mike Hogh and Phil Brown and reedmen John Barnes and Geoff Driscoll. Jack Honeyborne is a great jazz pianist who has also been MD to top stars such as Eartha Kitt, Vera Lynn and Harry Secombe. Guests have included trumpeter Ken Reece, trombonist Dave Hewett, reedman Goff Dubber and guitarist Johnny McCallum.
On the previous two August Bank Holiday afternoons a selected Woolpack Beer Festival Band plus guests has appeared from 1pm. With swinging jazz and up to 25 real ales on offer a great time was had by all!
Our regular sessions start at 2.30pm on the first Tuesday of each month. Admission is free but we do invite people to show their appreciation with voluntary donations.
